About Me

Dr. Amar is a double board-certified physician in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry, dedicated to advancing evidence-based, compassionate care for individuals navigating mental health and substance use disorders. He currently serves as Chief of Addiction Services at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, where he leads clinical programs addressing the full spectrum of addiction medicine, from acute stabilization to long-term recovery support.

 

Dr. Amar completed his psychiatry residency at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and his addiction psychiatry fellowship at Northwell Health, building a foundation in both general psychiatric care and the neurobiology of addiction. He went on to serve as Medical Director and Physician-in-Charge of Addiction Recovery Services at a Northwell-affiliated clinic for seven years, overseeing comprehensive treatment programs and mentoring clinical teams. He also brings active experience in psychiatric emergency care through CPEP work at Jamaica Hospital.

 

Licensed across multiple states, including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, and California, Dr. Amar combines deep clinical expertise with a forward-thinking approach to access and delivery of care, including telehealth. He frequently lectures on topics such as the neurobiology of addiction, the dopamine reward pathway, and pharmacologic management of substance use disorders, reflecting his commitment to medical education and the next generation of clinicians.

 

Beyond his clinical roles, Dr. Amar is the founder of Clarion Psychiatry, where he is building a practice focused on accessible, high-quality psychiatric and addiction care for the Long Island community. He is passionate about bridging clinical excellence with thoughtful, patient-centered innovation in mental health treatment.

Personalized Psychiatry and Addiction Treatment

Towards the goal of control of depression and anxiety, Dr. Amar uses medications as well as therapy to help support you in the work towards recovery. His approach is nonjudgmental, compassionate, and supportive. Using Motivational Interviewing, he uses the minimum effective medications necessary for treatment.

Dr. Amar has extensive experience working in the outpatient clinic, Psychiatric emergency rooms, detox as well as rehab and has to expertise in handling situations in all these complex settings. He provides consultation to the general Psychiatrists on handling Substance use-related issues and helps patients to link with different services.

 

Dr. Amar is experienced in handling cases involving opiate overuse and overdoses. He routinely starts patients on Suboxone/Buprenorphine and gives maintenance medications. He has successfully taken patients off the medications after stabilizing them. Other routinely handled cases include alcohol use, cannabis use, and Benzo use disorder. He sees patients with depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. He can give VIVITROL and other Long-Acting medication injections for maintenance treatment. Learn more about Vivitrol.

 

Dr. Amar is also on the faculty at the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program at Zucker Hillside Hospital where he supervises psychiatrists receiving training on treating addictive disorders.
